Akihabara: A District of Tokyo

If you’re on the hunt for a rare anime figurine (or even just a fan of anime in general) then you must visit Akihabara, the otaku cultural centre of Tokyo.

The array of shopping in Akihabara is astounding. Many of the buildings are multi-level hobby stores, selling anything remotely anime related – Yugioh cards, Pokémon plush, heavy-breasted female figurines – the variety is endless. We found the most Studio Ghibli related merchandise here (particularly My Neighbour Totoro) and, of course, that funny little egg, Gudetama.

Alongside the mega-stores, Akihabara also has the shopping atmosphere of a market, with many one-man stalls reflecting the Electric Town’s roots selling electronics. Now, as a haven for die-hard anime fans, Akihabara is a hybrid town of tech and animation.

Many stores sell used merchandise and toys, too. Mandarake, an 8-floor behemoth of a hobby shop, sells everything from used video games to rare artwork and manga. Here we found the creepy selection of naked, bald dolls pictured below. Even if you don’t plan on buying, browsing through the infinite range of stock feels like wandering through a Japanese toy museum.

The colossal department store Don Quijote is also worth a visit, though there are other branches outside Akihabara. The store is spread within another 8-floor building, yet the range is so plentiful that it’s often hard to navigate between the merchandise and other customers.

Akihabara is also famous for Maid Cafés and Manga Cafés, the latter basically an Internet café with access to DVDs and manga, too. We also found a stall selling ‘kebab sushi,’ which was basically a huge, kebab-sized hot roll of sushi with chicken in the middle and rice instead of salad – a combination that was surprisingly enjoyable.

Akihabara – a land of arcades and anime.

Enjoy the adventure.
